If you are unsure whether or not a material contains asbestos the only way to know for certain is to have it examined by a NATA accredited laboratory. Accredited sample analysis laboratories can be found on this page – NATA
Having a sample analysed will generally cost around $40 – $50 depending on the lab. You can also contact the lab for specific advice on how collect and send samples. Many of these labs can also undertake an asbestos survey or audit of your home. This will help you identify the asbestos materials within your home and provide guidance on the general condition of the materials.

Brief history of asbestos in Newcastle
In Australia, asbestos cement materials were first manufactured in the 1920s. Asbestos was commonly used in the manufacture of residential building materials from the mid-1940s until the late 1980s. The product was highly valued for its insulating and fire proofing properties. Asbestos was commonly used in the manufacture of such products as wall, ceiling, soffit and roof sheeting, guttering, concrete pipe, floor tiles and viny sheeting along with thousands of other applications.
From the mid-1940s until the late 1980s when asbestos was commonly used in residential building materials Newcastle and NSW as a whole underwent a period of significant growth and construction. For this reason all areas of Newcastle can potentially contain asbestos, particularly areas with older style homes such as Cooks Hill, Carrington, Merewether Mayfield, Adamstown, Lambton, Wallsend, Jesmond and Charlestown.
As a general rule of thumb, if your house was built in NSW;
- Before the mid-1980s, it is highly likely to have been built with some asbestos containing materials.
- Between the mid-1980s and 1990, it is likely to have been built with some asbestos containing materials.
- After 1990, it is highly unlikely (but possible) that it was built with any kind of asbestos containing materials.
