If you are unsure whether or not a material contains asbestos the only way to know for certain is to have it examined by a NATA accredited laboratory. Accredited sample analysis laboratories can be found on this page – NATA

Having a sample analysed will generally cost around $40 – $50 depending on the lab.  You can also contact the lab for specific advice on how collect and send samples. Many of these labs can also undertake an asbestos survey or audit of your home. This will help you identify the asbestos materials within your home and provide guidance on the general condition of the materials.

About Aztech Services

Initially established on the Gold Coast, Aztech Services has expanded its operation with offices in Canberra and many other parts of the country to become Australia’s leading asbestos removal specialists.

Aztech were originally drawn to Canberra to assist with the A.C.T. Governments “mr fluffy” asbestos removal program but quickly found a strong demand for our services and we have now established a depot in Hume and hired and trained a skilled local workforce.

Whilst we are still involved with the government loose fill asbestos removal program, Aztech’s Canberra branch has seen significant growth in asbestos and other HAZMAT removal works in other industries and sectors. One of our most experienced and capable state managers, Wes Castle, recently relocated from Brisbane to Canberra to oversee the continued growth of the Canberra branch.

As part of Aztech’s commitment to the community, we are proud to sponsor the Queanbeyan Kangaroos Football club.

Brief history of asbestos in Canberra

Canberra and the wider A.C.T. have a long and troubled history with asbestos. While the loose-fill “mr fluffy” asbestos receives much of the media and public attention, the legacy of asbestos in Canberra actually goes much further back.

Used in Australian construction and manufacturing since 1920, asbestos was highly valued for its insulating and fire proofing properties. So much so that it was even referred to by many as “the miracle fibre.” Following World War II, production of asbestos containing fibro sheeting in Australia increased dramatically. Between 1945 and 1955, Australian production of asbestos cement sheeting trebled from 8 million to 23 million square metres, and this trend continued right through to the 1970’s before being phased out in the late 1980’s. Hundreds of other asbestos containing products were also manufactured and installed during this period.

Unfortunately for the residents of Canberra, this “golden time” of asbestos production almost exactly mirrors a period of significant growth and construction in Canberra and the wider A.C.T. Some of the districts predominantly constructed during this period are; Canberra Central (first settled 1963), Canberra South (1963), Canberra North (1928), Woden Valley (1963), Belconnen (1967), Weston Creek (1969) and Tuggeranong (1974).

As a general rule of thumb, if your house was built in the A.C.T.;

  • Before the mid-1980s, it is highly likely to have been built with some asbestos containing materials.
  • Between the mid-1980s and 1990, it is likely to have been built with some asbestos containing materials.
  • After 1990, it is highly unlikely (but possible) that it was built with any kind of asbestos containing materials.
